Empowering youth as leaders on Healthy Youth Team Grants & IHDCYH workshop in Vancouver!
Message from Dr. Christine Chambers

The health of Canada’s youth is a priority for Canadians, for the federal government, and for CIHR-IHDCYH. Recently, we announced $9M in new research funding for Healthy Youth Team Grants that will improve the health and well-being of youth in Canada through youth-led or youth-engaged research. This is the next phase of our Healthy Youth Initiative that is working to bring evidence to Canada's Youth Policy. This funding will support up to six successful applications, with dedicated pools for Indigenous youth; Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse youth; and for reducing social inequalities in health for Canada’s youth. As part of our Empowered Youth focus area in our strategic plan, and responding to key themes identified by participants of our Healthy Youth Summit about engaging youth in all stages and aspects of research, these grants feature an innovative tri-partite leadership structure that will include an academic, a knowledge user and a youth as co-principal investigators. Please share with your networks to ensure that the voices of youth in Canada are heard in research!

I was glad to connect with so many members of our research community recently at our June 2 workshop on Maintaining Momentum and Strategies for Sustainability in Vancouver, BC. Facilitated by Drs. Diana Royce and Scott Comber, the workshop brought together over 100 leaders to explore successful strategies to promote sustainability of research groups and to learn about practical approaches for leading through change and transition. It was also my honour to represent IHDCYH and hear about the exceptional research being led by the human development, child and youth health research community during the Perinatal Child Health Research Annual Meetings (June 3-7, Vancouver).

Sincerely,

Christine
Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health
