Our Institute’s new activities in supporting Healthy Youth
Message from Dr. Christine Chambers

I am pleased to share first steps in IHDCYH’s new Healthy Youth initiative. This initiative will support the delivery of the Government of Canada’s Youth Policy by setting priorities, building capacity and supporting research and collaboration focused on the overall physical and mental health and well-being of youth. Through a series of grants we will support the development of strong inter-disciplinary teams and research, and the funding tools we have selected have been specifically chosen to meet these goals.

CIHR Scientific Directors and our teams often receive questions about granting programs and how major initiatives are designed and structured. At every stage, CIHR and the Institutes’ goals are to provide appropriate funding tools to expand system capacity, increase impact, and foster excellence in research. Planning grants fund activities and consultations to inform grant-writing, research and partnerships. For Healthy Youth these include building and strengthening collaborations, stakeholder and community consultation, and priority-setting – with a specific requirement that activities are co-designed and delivered together with youth. Apply by July 27 for the current round of planning grants.

Healthy Youth catalyst grants will launch this summer to support further collaboration, youth engagement and preliminary research activities. Emerging research projects and collaborations can be refined and strengthened by a catalyst grant, supporting growth of the teams and movement towards more defined research project goals. This helps to position inter-disciplinary teams for future stages in this funding arc, which could include collaborators leveraging their resources to support a larger project, team, or operating grant application. This strategic progression of grants is part of our Institute’s long-term plan to catalyze and sustain capacity in an identified area of need.

We look forward to championing the research teams taking on this work and supporting mobilization of your results.
