Changes at the CIHR Institute of Population and Public

Dear colleagues,

I am thrilled to share the great news that Jennifer Gunning will be joining the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) team as Associate Director starting May 9, 2022!

Jennifer is the current Manager of International Relations & Institute Support at CIHR and having worked closely with her in this capacity for the past six years, I know she will be an excellent addition to the IPPH team. Her over 20 years of experience at CIHR spans program delivery where she worked with Institutes to deliver their strategic programs, to building CIHR’s incredible HIV/AIDS and STBBI Research Initiative and providing leadership for many international and global health files.

Jennifer is an expert in building relationships and mutually beneficial collaborations across diverse partners and stakeholders. She is excited to work collaboratively with researchers, decision-makers, knowledge users and community groups to implement a shared vision for population and public health research and knowledge translation. Her commitment to health equity will no doubt be essential as IPPH releases and operationalizes our new strategic plan this summer.

Jennifer will help develop and steward all of IPPH’s priority areas over the next few years, as well as oversee the Institute’s day to day operations. She will work with the team and all of IPPH’s partners on existing and new initiatives and identify potential opportunities for population and public health researchers.

I also want to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Dr. Marisa Creatore who was key to IPPH’s success over the last five years. Marisa leveraged her diverse experience and extensive network within academia to build effective programs – in particular, the CIHR Healthy Cities Research Initiative, a $44+ million major initiative that would not have been possible without her leadership and insights. Her experience as an epidemiologist and skill as a leader were crucial once the COVID-19 pandemic hit as she led the IPPH team to make important contributions to CIHR’s pandemic response.

To that end, I know that myself, the IPPH team and CIHR staff are delighted to continue working with Marisa in her new role as the inaugural Executive Director of CIHR’s Centre for Pandemic Preparedness & Health Emergencies. She’s become a true friend and I’m very excited to see what she does in her new role.

Please join me in wishing Marisa all the best and welcoming Jennifer to the IPPH team!

Best,

Steven
