Updated Learning Modules: Addressing Bias in Peer Review

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to share updated learning modules designed to help participants in our peer and merit review processes recognize and reduce bias. These modules were developed collaboratively by the federal research funding agencies and reflect our commitment to promoting responsible research assessment, research excellence, and an inclusive research ecosystem.

First launched in 2016, the modules have been refreshed to be more user-friendly and accessible, and now include content on bias related to race, gender identity, disability, and sexual orientation:

These updates were informed by a literature review, input from subject matter experts with academic expertise and lived experience, and user-testing.

CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC each have specific requirements for completion of the modules, which will be communicated to participating reviewers and committee members.

On behalf of CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC, we thank all those who so generously share their time and expertise to support this essential component of the research process.
