Biography
Mark Pitcher, Ph.D., is the Chief of Staff at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, he provides strategic advice to leadership, analyzes national and international research trends, sets organizational standards and forges alliances that drive measurable impacts on research, healthcare and policy. He also serves as the Specialty Chief Editor for the Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Pain section in Frontiers in Pain Research.
Previously, as director of Health Sciences Interprofessional Research at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, he led the university’s health science research program, provided administrative oversight of the Institutional Review Board, and served as the university’s research integrity officer. This involved strategic integration of scientific expertise, organizational skills and leadership abilities to manage large interdisciplinary teams while ensuring strong governance and fostering national and international collaborations to support the development of innovative, future-oriented research initiatives that advance health and healthcare.
Dr. Pitcher completed his undergraduate training in Experimental Psychology at Bishop’s University, followed by graduate research at McGill University in Neuroscience, and postgraduate experience at the National Institutes of Health focusing on basic, clinical and epidemiological pain research. During his postdoctoral training, he also worked in the NIH Office of Pain Policy and Planning as a Policy Analyst, where he supported the development of the U.S. National Pain Strategy and served as a steering committee member for the CIHR’s Canadian Pain Summit.
