Update on CIHR’s transition to the tri-agency CV
Message from the Vice-President, Research Programs
March 19, 2026
Dear colleagues,
As you know, CIHR is transitioning to a new narrative-style tri-agency CV for our competitions and moving away from the Canadian Common CV (CCV).
We can confirm that the tri-agency CV will not be used for the Project Grant competition until Fall 2027 at the earliest, subject to results from pilot competitions, system readiness, and community feedback. To ensure applicants and reviewers have time to adapt to this new format, we will provide at least a year’s notice before implementation in the Project Grant competition.
In the meantime, we will continue to use the tri-agency CV for more competitions—to date, we have piloted this new CV in 18 competitions at CIHR—with the required CV format (Canadian Common CV or tri-agency CV) clearly indicated in each funding opportunity.
As we introduce the new CV format across more competitions, we are gathering feedback from applicants and reviewers. This input is helping us refine the CV submission process, develop training materials, and align program design so that, when the time comes, Project Grant applicants and reviewers will be well prepared to navigate the new format with confidence.
We are also working with the research community to simplify the tri-agency CV submission process. In competitions where the new CV is being piloted, only the nominated principal applicant—or a small number of participants—is required to submit the CV. Nominated principal applicants can supplement it with a separate attachment summarizing their team’s expertise and experience. We are gathering feedback from applicants and reviewers and will use this input to refine the process.
Before the tri-agency CV is adopted for the Project Grant competition, we will host webinars to help applicants and reviewers navigate the tri-agency CV. In addition, the tri-agency CV template, instructions, answers to frequently asked questions, and other support materials are available so applicants and reviewers can familiarize themselves with the new format.
As always, our Contact Centre is here to answer your questions: support-soutien@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.
Sincerely,
Adrian Mota
