Biography

Isra Levy is the recently retired Vice President of Medical Affairs and Innovation at Canadian Blood Services. Prior to that he served as Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ottawa Public Health, where he led evidence based public health initiatives, and was named Physician of the Year by the Ottawa Academy of Medicine in 2010. He is an epidemiologist with extensive clinical experience and has also worked at Health Canada and the Canadian Medical Association. In all roles he has been an active research partner, publishing more than 50 manuscripts and book chapters with a focus on policy relevant applied research in a diverse range of subjects.

Isra is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and the University of Ottawa, where he specialized in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. His research work has been published in numerous Canadian and international scientific journals, and he has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Ottawa and on a variety of editorial boards, including Health Promotion and Chronic Diseases in Canada and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Isra is a recipient of the Order of Ottawa, and an honorary life member of the Canadian Public Health Association awarded in “recognition of his exceptional body of work as an educator, researcher and practitioner in the field of public health”. He has also been recognized by the Public Health Physicians of Canada and the University of Ottawa alumni for distinguished service.
