In-Person Meetings

We are still sorting out details for these in-person events, including where they will be located. Include travel and meeting costs in your budget, accounting for potential distance to major cities across Canada. To ensure sufficient funds, for your proposal, consider travel and meeting costs accounting for potential distance to major cities across Canada, and budget accordingly.

Working with Applicant Partners

Do I have to work with one of the applicant partners when submitting my application?

No. Working with an applicant partner is completely optional.

Partnerships with the Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction can be established on a 1-to-1 basis, if applicable.

Statistics Canada will not be partnering individually with applicants; however, Statistics Canada will be providing overall guidance to potential applicants that would benefit from their data holdings and statistical and/or subject matter expertise at the January 14th webinar (English) and January 28th webinar (in French only) (French) and can answer questions about data access/linkages.

Mitacs is offering supplementary internship funding for trainees on your projects. You must apply directly to the Mitacs Accelerate Program.

Selecting a Pool

How do I choose between a specific pool and the general pool?

Pools are created to reserve funding for different areas of research. Applicants must select one pool that best aligns with the main area of research outlined in your application.

If I select Priority Area 1 as my first choice and Priority Area 2 as my second choice, will I be considered for Area 2 if Area 1 funding is insufficient?

No. You must select one of the specific funding pools under the "Priority Announcement/Funding Pool Title" drop-down list. Select the research Priority Area that you deem most appropriate for the activities being proposed in your application.

Although it is possible to select more than one research area, due to ResearchNet limitations, only your first choice will be considered; all other selections will be disregarded.

Pathways for Community Organizations

How can community organizations apply for CIHR funding if they do not hold an institutional ethics board?
    • An institution can apply to become a CIHR Eligible Institution Authorized to Administer Grant and Award Funds. Instructions are available online. As you will notice on the bottom of the page, you may contact our Financial Monitoring team (for CIHR) if you have any questions pertaining to this process.
    • Institutions that cannot meet the requirements to become a CIHR Eligible Institution Authorized to Administer Grant and Award Funds may still be permitted to administer the funds under special terms and conditions, as determined by CIHR, following an eligibility review. Instructions for this process are available here.
    • In some circumstances, it may also be possible for an organization or individual to receive a direct payment.

This process does not have to be completed before you submit your application, but it does have to be completed in order to receive funds. This process can be intensive and does take some time, so it is best to get started as soon as possible. Questions related to institutional eligibility, and document package to submit for assessment, must be sent to support-soutien@cihr-irsc.gc.ca
