Celebrating 25 Years of Health Research Excellence
Message from the President
May 30, 2025
Dear colleagues,
This year, we proudly celebrate the 25th anniversary of CIHR. For a quarter of a century, we have been supporting the discoveries and innovations that improve lives, and our mission has never been more vital.
As we mark this milestone, we reflect on the incredible impact of health research in strengthening Canada's health care systems, tackling pressing health challenges, and improving the well-being of people here at home and around the world.
From decades of support for Dr. Pieter Cullis's pioneering work on lipid nanoparticles – key to advanced cancer therapies and mRNA vaccines – to early funding for Dr. Daniel Drucker's work on glucagon-like peptides, which paved the way for drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, CIHR has consistently championed world-class research in pursuit of better health for all.
This celebration is also a moment for gratitude. I want to personally thank Canada's exceptional health research community, the dedicated staff at CIHR and its Institutes, our valued partners, and the many individuals who volunteer their time to peer review applications and share their invaluable insights. Your passion and commitment have made Canada a health research leader.
Health research matters. The advancements we rely on – from cutting-edge medical treatments to improved disease prevention, diagnosis, and care – are the direct result of rigorous research. While we have made remarkable progress, there is still much to do. Good health will always depend on great research.
As we join together to celebrate this anniversary, I invite you to explore the incredible contributions of Canada's health researchers.
On behalf of all of us at CIHR, thank you for the contributions that you have made to improve health outcomes in Canada. As we celebrate our first 25 years of supporting research excellence, we look forward to a bold and bright future of scientific discoveries and advances that will further improve the health and prosperity of Canadians and people throughout the world.
Sincerely,
Paul C. Hébert, MD, MHSc, FRCPC, FCAHS
