Research Centre's Activities
In addition to the funding opportunities announced on the investment page, below is a list of other activities undertaken by the CRPPHE team and collaborators in support of delivering on the Center’s mandate.
- The Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN)
CIRN is a network of networks focused on immunization and vaccine research that has been funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and CIHR since 2009 (initially as the PHAC/CIHR Influenza Research Network or PCIRN). PHAC has renewed funding for CIRN in the form of $15 million over 5 years starting in 2024 to be delivered and managed by the CRPPHE. The funding will support coordinated, collaborative, and multidisciplinary vaccine and immunization-related research. This pan-Canadian network will continue to strengthen Canada's research capacity, evidence base, and expertise in immunization and vaccine research, support clinical trials for vaccine-preventable diseases, and will establish structures and processes to pivot and reprioritize research activities to respond to emerging infectious public health events with actual or potential significant negative impacts to the health of people in Canada. -
CRPPHE co-sponsors Pandemic Preparedness Health System Impact Fellows (HSIF) with provincial public health organizations (Closed)
As we reflect on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the value of ensuring strong integration between research and practice has been repeatedly highlighted as a means to ensure timely, relevant, and evidence-informed public health and health care responses. This is particularly true in times of crisis and system disruption when rapid, bi-directional flow of information between systems on the ground responding to the emergency, and those performing research and evaluation, is critical. Increasing opportunities for embedded research training opportunities has been identified as one mechanism to support the goal of better integrating research and practice.The Health System Impact Program led by the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) has been providing opportunities since 2017 for highly qualified PhD trainees and postdoctoral researchers to develop embedded research projects that address the most pressing problems faced by health system organizations, and to support evidence-informed decision-making. This year (2024), the Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) is partnering with IHSPR to create a new stream within this program for Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergency fellows hosted by provincial public health organizations including the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), Public Health Ontario (PHO), and l'Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ).
The fellows within this Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies stream will be members of a newly created pan-Canadian network of HSI fellows who work to prepare for and respond to health emergencies across Canadian provinces. It is anticipated that this program will contribute to pandemic and health emergency preparedness in Canada, and the objectives of the CRPPHE, through:
- Building capacity in applied public health and public health systems research focused on pandemics and health emergencies;
- Contributing to greater integration at the provincial level of public health research, policy and practice to support evidence-informed decision-making; and
- Building a community of practice of fellows, supervisors and knowledge users that can be leveraged to contribute to a coordinated, cohesive response to future health emergencies.
- Solidarity Ebola: Vaccine Trial Against Sudan Ebolavirus
In partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the International Development Research Center (IDRC) the CRPPHE invested $1.5M as part of Canada's total $4.8 M contribution to support a 2-year study on the safety and immunogenicity of three candidate vaccines against Ebola disease caused by Sudan ebolavirus; build national clinical trial capabilities to respond to future outbreaks; and strengthen local and global research and development capabilities for clinical research on vaccines for priority diseases. - Canadian Post COVID-19 Condition Research Network Kick-off Meeting
Shortly after announcing the results of the $20 million Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC) Research Network grant competition, the CRPPHE held a kick-off meeting on February 6, 2023, to introduce the successful team to key Government of Canada departments and initiatives relevant to the Post COVID-19 condition. This meeting had the overall objective of enabling and facilitating coordination and cohesion between ongoing Government of Canada initiatives relevant to addressing the long-term biological, clinical and population impacts of COVID-19 infections on people living in Canada and Canadian health systems. This funded network and coordination efforts are also in alignment with the recommendations that were identified by the Chief Science Advisor’s Task Force on Post-COVID-19 condition.
