Message from the Chair of Governing Council: Update on interim leadership at CIHR

Dear colleagues,

As Dr. Michael Strong mentioned at the end of May, he will not be seeking a second term as President of CIHR. His last day in the role will be July 7, 2023, after which he will return to Western University to continue overseeing his research program focused on ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. I would like to thank Dr. Strong for his exceptional contributions over the last five years, notably, the way in which he mobilized CIHR to provide a timely and sustained research response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

I am pleased to confirm that Catherine MacLeod, CIHR’s Executive-Vice President, will serve as acting President until Dr. Strong’s successor assumes their role. I would also like to thank Dr. Tammy Clifford, who has agreed to serve as acting President for the week of July 10.

During this time of transition, CIHR will continue to implement the priorities identified in CIHR’s Strategic Plan and fulfill our mandate as the Government of Canada’s health research investment agency.

The process for appointing Dr. Strong’s successor, which is managed outside of CIHR, by the Privy Council Office, is underway. In keeping with our commitment to open and frequent communications, CIHR will keep you informed of the latest developments. Our next President, whoever they may be, will be fortunate to work alongside CIHR’s dedicated staff and Canada’s hardworking health research community as, collectively, you strive to achieve the best health for all, powered by outstanding research.

Thank you.

Dr. Marie-Josée Hébert
Chair, CIHR Governing Council
