Biography
Nancy Edwards is a Professor Emerita and Distinguished University Professor in the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. Dr. Edwards obtained her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Windsor and completed graduate studies in epidemiology at McMaster University and McGill University. She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has received numerous awards including three honorary doctoral degrees.
Nancy retired in July 2018 after working in the field of community health in Canada and internationally for over 40 years. Her research program was multiple interventions in community health with a focus on fall prevention in Canada, and maternal and child health in low-income countries.
Currently, Nancy is on several health-related boards, technical, and advisory committees including: Ontario’s Institute of Clinical Evaluation Sciences, Family Councils of Ontario, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (Ottawa Chapter), England’s Schools of Public Health Research, and National Research Council’s Standing Committee for Houses and Small Buildings.
Nancy was the inaugural Director of the Population Health PhD Program at the University of Ottawa. She was a member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Governing Council for several years before being appointed Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (2008-2016). In the latter role, she was a champion for global health, served on the Management Committee of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, and worked closely with Canadian and European Research partners to develop large-scale implementation science funding initiatives. Nancy’s memoir was released by FriesenPress in 2022.
