CIHR Vice-President, Research – Programs
Message from the President

February 2, 2022

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Christian Baron has been appointed Vice-President, Research – Programs at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He will begin this role on February 21, 2022.

In this role, Dr. Baron will join Dr. Tammy Clifford, Vice-President Research – Learning Health Systems, and together they will lead CIHR's two research portfolios. Dr. Baron will be responsible for designing, developing, and administering CIHR's funding programs and science policies. As the inaugural Vice-President of her portfolio, Dr. Clifford will ensure that CIHR's broad spectrum of knowledge mobilization initiatives fulfil our mandate in this area, as expressed in the CIHR Act, including embracing the vital importance of using data and research evidence to improve patient care.

As Vice-President, Research – Programs, Dr. Baron will lead major elements of the CIHR Strategic Plan and support me in my role as Chair of Science Council. He will work with Scientific Directors to guide the agency's strategic initiatives and support CIHR Institutes. He will also be responsible for the College of Reviewers and the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research.

Dr. Baron comes to CIHR from Université de Montréal where he has been Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine since 2008 and Chair from 2008 to 2015. He also served as Vice-Dean for Research and Development at the Faculty of Medicine from 2015 to 2020. He received his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Munich in Germany.

I trust you will join me in welcoming Dr. Baron to CIHR's executive team. I want to thank Dr. Clifford for her leadership in overseeing the two research portfolios while we carried out the recruitment process.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Strong, MD, FRCP, FCAHS, FAAN
President, CIHR
