CIHR dedicated funding for European programs in key research areas
November 2022

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) continues its long-standing collaboration with the European Commission by supporting five additional joint transnational calls.

The Canadian dedicated funding will support the involvement of Canadian researchers in multinational research consortia in the following areas: neurodegenerative diseases, rare diseases, and antimicrobial resistance.

CIHR engagement in the EU Framework Programme is predominantly through public-to-public (P2P) partnerships involving EU member states, Third Countries (e.g. Canada), Associated Countries, and the European Commission.

To date, CIHR has participated in 60 joint transnational calls under P2Ps and has funded 223 multinational teams. The organization has invested over $62 million and leveraged over $230 million through these programs. CIHR, in collaboration with our Canadian partners, is dedicating an additional $5 million to five joint transnational calls in 2022 (two) and 2023 (three).

Joint Transnational Calls

ResearchNet links to the joint transnational calls will be added below as they become available.

The Network of Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (CoEN) Call: Pathfinder 6

Description: To establish research projects using new and unconventional approaches and creative solutions to the challenges of neurodegeneration research by undertaking high-risk/high-payoff research. The aim of the CoEN initiative is to build productive links between research groups within recognized CoEs in neurodegeneration. The designated Center of Excellence for Canada is the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA). Note, Canadian applicants MUST be a member of the CCNA in one of the following roles: a Nominated Principal Investigator, a Principal Investigator or a Co-Applicant.

Funding: $666,000 from CIHR Institute of Aging to support up to two (2) grants over three (3) years. Maximum amount per grant is up to $333,333, over three (3) years.

Deadline: December 9, 2022 (full proposal submitted to coen@mrc.ukri.org by 16:00 GMT (11am EST) and abbreviated application to CIHR by December 20, 2022

2022 JPND Call: 2022 Working Groups “Health and social care research at the moderate and late stages of neurodegenerative diseases”

Description: To establish expert working groups to discuss research strategies concerning the impact of COVID-19 on the development and progression of neurodegenerative disease.

Funding: $75,000 from the CIHR Institute of Aging to support the Canadian component of one transnational working groups over one year. Maximum amount per grant is $75,000 over one year.

Deadline: 14 December 2022 (full proposal)

EJP 2023 Rare Diseases Call: “Natural history studies addressing unmet needs in rare diseases”

Description: The objective of this call is to conduct efficient, innovative, and high-quality natural history studies which will facilitate the understanding a rare disease’s progression throughout the lifespan of a patient. The goal of these studies is to collect and analyse comprehensive patient data to define targets for future therapies, taking into consideration innovation of therapies, safety and efficacy.

Funding: $1.2M from the CIHR Institute of Genetics, $150,000 from Cystic Fibrosis and $450,000 from Ataxia Canada for a total of up to $1.8M, to support the Canadian component of up to four transnational teams, over three years. Maximum amount per grant is $450,000 over three years.

Deadline: 15 February 2023 (pre-proposal); 14 June 2023 (full proposal)

JPIAMR 2023 Call: “Development of innovative strategies, tools, technologies, and methods for diagnostics and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance”

Description: The objective of the call is to take action against the growing global threat of increasing resistance in pathogenic organisms, and the spread of anti-microbial resistance (AMR). JPIAMR calls on the scientific community to develop or improve existing tools and digital technologies for (1) AMR diagnosis and/or (2) One Health AMR surveillance.

Funding: $1.8M from the CIHR AMR Ring-Fenced Initiative to support the Canadian component of up to three transnational teams, over three years. If the team coordinator is Canadian, the maximum amount per grant is $600K over three years, whereas Canadian team partners may receive $500K over three years.

Deadline: 7 March 2023 (pre-proposal); 4 July 2023 (full proposal)

2023 JPND Call: “Large scale OMICS approaches to drug-target finding in neurodegenerative diseases"

Description: To establish research projects aimed at improving the understanding of the complex and multifactorial pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases through multi-OMICS (branches of science known informally as omics are various disciplines in biology whose names end in the suffix – omics, such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) and Big Data approaches designed to find new drug targets and target biomarkers for the development of tailored and personalized treatment approaches.

Funding: $666,000 from the CIHR Institute of Aging to support the Canadian component of up to two transnational teams, over four years. Maximum amount per grant is $333,000, over four years.

Deadline: 7 March 2023 (pre-proposal); 27 June 2023 (full proposal)
