Indigenous Healthy Life Trajectories (I-HeLTI) Development Workshop

On June 11 – 12, 2018 a Development Workshop for the Indigenous Component of Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (HeLTI) will take place in Ottawa, Ontario. This workshop will have limited space. Thus, for interested individuals and organizations who would like to receive an invitation from CIHR to attend this workshop, the priority will be given to potential invitees who are associated with Indigenous (i.e., First Nations, Inuit and Métis) communities and Indigenous organizations. Invitees would be responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation expenses to attend this event.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for more than 60% of deaths globally, and 80% of NCD deaths occur in countries that have experienced rapid changes in population demographics and environments, lifestyle changes and changes in diet. To address these issues, CIHR developed the Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (HeLTI), which follows a Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) approach. CIHR previously launched an International component of HeLTI and this workshop is intended to support the launch of an Indigenous-specific HeLTI (I-HeLTI) in Canada.

NCDs, such as diabetes/obesity and conditions related to mental wellness, are also priority issues for Indigenous Peoples in Canada. As a result, this I-HeLTI Development Workshop will bring interested First Nations, Métis, Inuit and Urban Indigenous communities together to inform the development of an Indigenous component of HeLTI and scope how to build community participation in the development of an Indigenous-focused DOHaD cohort. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to address community readiness, priorities, research capacity, relationships with researchers, data capacity considerations, sex and gender considerations and governance.

A limited number of Workshop places are available for Individuals associated with Indigenous communities and/or Indigenous organizations to participate in the I-HeLTI Workshop at their own expense. Interested applicants are asked to sign up at the following website and complete the on-line request to participate in the Workshop. Priority will be given to individuals representing Indigenous communities east of Ontario and in the north. CIHR will respond to successful applicants who are invited to attend the Workshop with the Instructions on how to register for the Workshop.

Applicants are required to submit their request by May 8th, 2018.
