2026 Early Career Researcher Workshop

From October 6-8, 2026, the CIHR Institutes of Cancer Research and Genetics co-hosted an Early Career Researcher (ECR) Workshop in Wendake, Quebec.

This workshop welcomed 46 ECRs in cancer or genetics research to learn about establishing themselves as researchers from an accomplished group of speakers.

The workshop began with a welcome and introduction to CIHR and the Institutes delivered by Dr. Fei-Fei Liu (Scientific Director of the Institute of Cancer Research) and Dr. Christopher McMaster (Scientific Director of the Institute of Genetics). After this initial welcome, workshop attendees were invited to participate in a traditional Indigenous opening ceremony with Elder Raymond Gros-Louis and finished up the evening with poster presentations of their research.

Over the next two days, participants heard from organization representatives and expert speakers on a range of topics including grant funding and writing, knowledge mobilization, research commercialization, use of AI in research and Indigenous health research. They also had the opportunity to participate in interactive sessions on grant writing, grant peer review, budgeting, and developing a research program.

ICR would like to extend a huge thank you to all the speakers and researchers who joined us to share their knowledge with the ECRs and a shout out to all the ECRs for bringing their enthusiasm to learn with us! We look forward to watching all the ECRs careers develop.
