In Memoriam – Dr. Juliet Daniel

Canada's research funding agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council—are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Juliet Daniel, a pioneering cancer biologist and advocate for equity in health research.

Dr. Daniel was a professor at McMaster University and led the Dr. Juliet Daniel Lab. Throughout her career, she led transformative research to better understand the causes of, and identify potential treatments for, triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive disease that disproportionately affects Black women.

After discovering the Kaiso gene in 1999, Dr. Daniel went on to show that it contributes to the spread of triple-negative breast cancer, especially in Black women. Her work opened the door to new ways of stopping cancer progression.

Dr. Daniel left a lasting impact at CIHR: she served on the Institute Advisory Board for the Institute of Cancer Research, contributed to CIHR's anti-racism action plan, and helped develop a roadmap to address research gaps for breast cancer screening. She also represented Canada on the Human Frontier Science Program Council of Scientists.

We extend our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched.
