Notice of Upcoming Funding Opportunity: Community Based Research in Climate Change Priority Areas

Introduction

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) under the scientific leadership of the Institute of Infection and Immunity (III), in partnership with the Institute of Aging (IA), the Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the Community Based Research in Climate Change Priority Areas Funding Opportunity.

Overview

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the partnered work of communities and researchers in knowledge development and capacity-building initiatives of relevance to communities working to combat the differential health impacts of climate change.

Research Areas

This funding opportunity will support planning and development activities and/or research related activities at the community level relevant to one of the following research areas:

• Climate Justice: Applications must focus on activities related to improving equitable health outcomes through climate justice, defined as research that focuses on the inequitable distribution of the burdens of climate change on population health and the efforts to mitigate them.
• Alternative Diagnoses of Lyme Disease: Applications must focus on activities that identify and address knowledge gaps related to people diagnosed with Lyme disease (LD) through alternative methods, in order to contribute to enhanced understanding and a more comprehensive national picture of LD. This includes but is not limited to understanding their needs and experiences within and outside the health care system.
• Food Security in Northern Communities: Applications must focus on activities that address food security and climate change in relation to Northern Indigenous Peoples and their communities.
• Health Impacts of Climate Change on Older Adults: Applications must focus on activities that work to address the health impacts of climate change on older adults.

Objectives

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Catalyze community-led research planning and development activities in Canada that ensure the inclusion and meaningful representation of people experiencing climate change-related health impacts;
• Foster meaningful and equitable partnerships between communities in Canada impacted by climate change and researchers to advance research focused on community-driven priorities;
• Engage impacted communities to strengthen capacity for knowledge mobilization; and/or,
• Better position teams of researchers and community partners to develop applications for future funding in support of co-developed CBR climate change research and knowledge mobilization projects/programs.

Funds Available

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is anticipated to be $1,625,000, enough to fund approximately 13 grants at a maximum amount of $125,000 per grant per year for up to one year.

Of this $1,625,000:

• $500,000 is available to fund up to four (4) applications relevant to the Climate Justice Pool.
• $500,000 is available to fund up to four (4) applications relevant to the Lyme Disease Pool.
• $375,000 is available to fund up to three (3) applications relevant to the Food Security in Northern Communities Pool.
• $250,000 is available to fund up to two (2) application relevant to the Health Impacts of Climate Change on Older Adults Pool.
