Description
The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) Travel Award competition is to support trainees registered in a master's or doctoral program, or at the post-doctoral or post-health professional degree stage to present their research (oral or poster), relevant to the Institute's strategic priorities and mandate, at national or international meetings, conferences or symposia.
The ICRH Travel Award competition does not support travel for the following purposes:
- Research skill(s) development or update;
- Exchange programs; or,
- Lectureships.
ICRH is committed to promoting the inclusion and advancement of groups underrepresented in science as one of the means to enhance excellence in research, training and knowledge mobilization. CIHR’s position on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is available in the Tri Agency Statement on Equity.
Applicants are encouraged to complete the CIHR Unconscious Bias Learning Module.
Objectives
The ICRH Travel Awards Funding Opportunity is expected to provide travel funds to individuals in aid of knowledge mobilization activities consistent with the CIHR-ICRH’s vision, mandate and strategic directions. In addition to this overarching objective, the Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) has provided funds for travel awards related to knowledge mobilization of Sleep Research.
Funds Available
ICRH and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should ICRH or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, ICRH and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $18,000, enough to fund approximately 12 awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners participate.
- The value of the ICRH Travel Award is $1,500.
- Each award is for one (1) year.
- Of this $18,000:
- $12,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the ICRH General Pool;
- $6,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the ICRH / Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) Pool.
Research Areas
ICRH General Pool
ICRH will provide funding to trainees registered in a master's or doctoral program, or at the post-doctoral or post-health professional degree stage to present their own research (oral or poster), relevant to the Institute's strategic priorities, at national or international meetings, conferences or symposia.
Specific Eligibility Requirements:
- A sponsor report (letter of support) completed by your supervisor or someone from your institution must confirm your status as a full-time Masters or PhD student or as a post-doctoral fellow at a recognized Canadian academic institution.
- ICRH will provide funding for travel that occurs between March 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023.
ICRH / Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) Pool
CSS and ICRH will jointly provide funding to trainees registered in a master's or doctoral program or at the post-doctoral or post-health professional degree stage working in sleep research in Canada for travel to a major scientific sleep meeting, relevant to both the CSS and ICRH mandates, to present their research. This includes, but is not limited to, meetings organized by the:
- CSS;
- World Sleep Society (WSS);
- Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS);
- European Respiratory Society (ERS);
- World Sleep Federation (WSF);
- World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM);
- Society for Neuroscience (SfN),
- American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST); or,
- American Thoracic Society (ATS).
Specific Eligibility Requirements:
- A sponsor report (letter of support) completed by your supervisor or someone from your institution must confirm your status as a full-time Masters or PhD student or as a post-doctoral fellow at a recognized Canadian academic institution.
- Please attach confirmation of your current Canadian Sleep Society membership (in good standing) . Failure to do so will result in the application being withdrawn from the ICRH / Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) Pool.
- Previous CSS-ICRH Travel Award winners are not eligible to reapply to the ICRH / Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) Pool in the subsequent competition year.
- ICRH and CSS will provide funding for travel that occurs between March 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023.
Eligibility
Eligibility to Apply
For an application to be eligible:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be a Trainee registered full-time in a Master’s or doctoral program OR be at the post-doctoral or post–health professional degree stage.
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must be the first author and presenter of the presentation or poster.
- Individuals are limited to one Travel Award application to this competition. Each application can only contain one presentation or paper; any additional presentation, paper or abstracts will be deleted.
- Only one Travel Award will be awarded to a recipient in any fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).
- Travel must occur between March 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023.
- ICRH Travel Awards are available to Canadians studying within Canada and abroad, and to Canadians and non-Canadians affiliated with a Canadian Institution at the time of the application deadline.
Guidelines
General CIHR Policies
Successful applicants funded through this funding opportunity and any other persons working on the project must fully comply with the applicable CIHR Funding Policies.
Allowable Costs
Applicants should review the Use of Grant Funds section of the Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) Financial Administration Guide for requirements regarding allowable costs and activities.
The following expenses will be considered eligible for funding received through this funding opportunity:
- Travel and accommodation for participant (all travel will be by the lowest economy fare)
- Per diem for meals (when not already provided with the conference; applicants must use their home institution’s per diem rates)
- Conference registration fees
- Printing costs (e.g. posters)
Conditions of Funding
- The applicant must consent to the use and disclosure of full application and nominative information for relevance review and funding decisions at the time of application.
- All applicants must submit the confirmation that their paper or poster has been accepted for presentation by February 20, 2023, and before funds are awarded.
- An applicant cannot change or substitute the conference described in this application after the application has been submitted.
- In the event that the Notice of Decision is delayed and that the conference the applicant plans on attending takes place prior to the release of funding, the applicant will be required to pay for their own travel costs without guarantee of receiving an award.
- Successful applicants may be profiled in CIHR communications and may have to, if asked, submit a photo and/or short bio to be used in CIHR newsletters, etc.
Review Process and Evaluation
Relevance Review Process
ICRH will perform a relevance review to identify applications that are in alignment with the objectives and Research Areas.
Applicants are required to indicate and explain relevance to the Research Area.
Applications that are not deemed to be relevant will be withdrawn from the competition.
ICRH and Partners will use the information provided in sections 3.a., 3.b., and 3.c. of the Application Form to assess relevancy. Additional material provided elsewhere in the application may be used for clarification. No other information will be considered.
Relevance Criteria
To support the strategic objectives of this funding opportunity, the following evaluation criteria will be used:
- Relevance
- Relevance of the presentation: Relevance of the applicant’s research presentation to the Objectives and priority areas as described in the Research Areas section.
- Relevance of the conference: Relevance of the conference to the mandate and/or the strategic research priority areas of the selected CIHR Institute or Initiative.
Funding Decision
Each Relevant Research Area will have its own separate budget, as described in the Description section under Funds Available. Eligible applications deemed to be relevant to each Research Area will be funded based on a randomization process.

- Applicants are required to obtain a CIHR PIN prior to submitting their application.
- Complete the Institute Community Support (ICS) application form [ PDF (291 KB) ].
- Attach the abstract submitted for presentation, confirmation of abstract submission or confirmation of abstract acceptance (if available at time of submission), and any relevant letters of support from co-applicants and partner organizations.
- Email your application to: icrh.iscr@cihr-irsc.gc.ca. All emails received will be acknowledged.
A complete application consists of a:
- Signed ICS form
- Copy of abstract to be presented at the meeting
- Copy of letters of support from the applicant’s supervisor.
- Copy of confirmation of current Canadian Sleep Society membership (in good standing, required for ICRH / Canadian Sleep Society [CSS] Research Area).
Complete applications must be submitted before 23:59 MST on Monday January 23, 2023. Late applications or applications with missing documents will not be accepted. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications are complete and submitted by the deadline.

Administration of Funds
CIHR grants are generally administered by the business office of an institution or organization declared eligible to administer CIHR funds after a financial and eligibility review.
Organizations identified as the Institution Paid may be required to undergo a financial and eligibility review, if they have not already done so, in order to administer the grant funds. They may be required to sign a funding agreement with CIHR. If necessary, a successful applicant may choose to have their funds administered by a CIHR eligible institution.
Funds will not be released to the Institution Paid of a successful applicant unless they have been approved to administer funding.
