My areas of expertise are social isolation and loneliness of older adults. I am currently involved in creating Case Finder (Gatekeeper) type programs for reaching isolated adults in Manitoba. There is an intersection here between social isolation and mental illness, however, my main focus/expertise is on social isolation. I am also involved with working with paramedics examining a community paramedicine case finder approach that links vulnerable adults (all ages) to appropriate help and service. With this latter work, I see a real potential for technological solutions that would aid paramedics in their work in helping some of our most vulnerable people in the community. I conduct research examining the role of the built environment (housing and neighbourhood) on health, functioning and well-being of people living with dementia. We have ongoing projects in long-term care and community setting. Our team is starting a project to explore the neighbourhood built environment's influence in mobility, orientation and social participation for community-dwelling people with dementia. I am interested to expand that area to bring in the role of technological solutions in community mobility for this population.
