CIHR mourns the loss of Dr. Jack Tu
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we mourn the sudden passing of Dr. Jack Tu, on May 30th.
Since joining the staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 1996, Jack’s hallmark became the pursuit of excellence, be it as an internationally respected cardiologist, or as a professor in both the University of Toronto’s Department of Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He was also a senior scientist at the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences.
A visionary, Jack was an early proponent of harnessing the limitless power of “big data” as a research tool, recognizing its huge potential. He received a number of major grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to support his research into using big data to transform the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, he worked tirelessly with partners in the health system to identify gaps in care and improve health outcomes for Canadians. The international scientific community will forever recognize Dr. Tu’s contribution to the cardiovascular research community and the advancement of cardiovascular disease management.
Jack was a new member of the Institute Advisory Board (IAB) of CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR). While his time with IHSPR’s IAB was relatively short, his professionalism, strong work ethic, and positive attitude had an impact on our entire organization and on all of us who had the good fortune of working with him.
We encourage you to read this tribute to Jack, which highlights his significant contributions to Canada’s cardiovascular disease research community.
On behalf of CIHR, we offer our sincerest condolences to Jack’s family, colleagues and friends.
