Foundation Grant: Application process

Equity and Diversity Questionnaire

  • As announced on May 10, 2018, completion of the Equity and Diversity Questionnaire is now mandatory for all CIHR application participants.
  • The Program Leader – Administrator Coordinator will not be able to submit the application for funding until every participant identified in the “Identify Participants” task has completed the questionnaire (status will change from “Pending” to “Completed”).
  • Application participants have the option to choose “I prefer not to answer” for each question, but you must select this option (or another option) for each question and save your responses in order for your questionnaire to be marked as complete.
  • Once you complete the Equity and Diversity Questionnaire, your responses will be retained for future application submissions.
  • The Equity and Diversity Questionnaire must be completed prior to the eSubmission deadline.
  • The Equity and Diversity Questionnaire should take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  • For more information about the Equity and Diversity Questionnaire, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions and How-To Instructions on the CIHR website.

The Foundation Grant program's application process includes a registration, followed by a three-stage competition and review process. Stage 1 and stage 2 applications are completed in a structured format that aligns with the adjudication criteria specific to each stage, as set out in the funding opportunity, and these are evaluated using a specific peer review process as detailed in the Peer Review Manual – Foundation.

  • Stage 1 application and review focus on the caliber of the applicant(s);
  • Stage 2 application and review focus on the quality of the proposed program of research; and,
  • Stage 3 review, the final assessment stage, involves the integration of the results of the stage 2 reviews.

In order to successfully complete their registration and stage 1 and stage 2 structured applications, program leaders are also required to include the relevant CV information by completing the following CVs through the Canadian Common CV (CCV) using the instructions below:

  • Foundation Registration CV
  • Foundation CV

A Notice of Decision (NOD) is provided to all applicants at the end of the stage 1 peer review process; subsequently, successful stage 1 applicants will be invited to submit a stage 2 application and will be provided with a CIHR calculated budget baseline. Stage 2 applicants will be informed of the status of their application at the end of stage 2 and a final Notice of Decision will be provided to stage 2 applicants after the integration of stage 2 and stage 3 results.

Detailed instructions on how to complete a Foundation Grant registration and application (stages 1 and 2) are available in the supporting documents below. Additional learning resources such as webinars and learning modules are also available on the CIHR Learning activities and resources web page.
