Message from Dr. Michael J. Strong, incoming President of CIHR

September 28, 2018

October 1, 2018 will be my first day at CIHR, and I am very excited to begin this next chapter of my career!

When I decided to apply for the position of CIHR President, I was driven by a simple motivation: the desire to maximize the power of health research to improve people’s lives.  It is this core motivation that inspires me as an ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) researcher, and that will continue to inspire me as I take on this new role.

Working with CIHR’s Governing Council, and in consultation with the research community, I am committed to developing a vision for how best to conduct and support health research in Canada, and I very much look forward to hearing your views on this subject.

As we develop a new strategic plan for the years ahead, it is vital that we keep our sights focused on CIHR’s mandate. The Canadian health research ecosystem is both vast and complex, and CIHR has an important and specific role to play in that environment. As President, I will always seek to strengthen CIHR’s ability to support innovative health research and to collaborate with like-minded organizations – both in Canada and around the world.  In these and all other matters, our decisions will be principled, driven by our legislative mandate, and guided by our duty to be responsible stewards of public funds.

Health research is one of the most important investments we can make as a nation.  I look forward to working with you to ensure that those investments produce the greatest possible good for Canadians.

Dr. Michael Strong
President, CIHR
