Update on the budget for the 2017-18 Foundation Grant competition

December 7, 2017

At its November 2017 meeting, CIHR’s Governing Council approved the further reduction of the budget for the 2017-18 Foundation Grant competition.

In July, Dr. Roderick McInnes announced that the budget for the competition would be $125M. The application deadline for this competition was in September, and fewer applications were received than anticipated. Given this lower application pressure, the competition budget will be reduced to $100M (total), and $25M will be redirected to the Fall 2017 Project Grant competition. The application pressure for the Project Grant competition was higher than originally anticipated, so this redistribution of funds will help CIHR balance the needs of the Project and Foundation Grant programs.

This budget decision is only in effect for the 2017-18 Foundation Grant competition. Future direction for the Foundation Grant program, including budget considerations, will be discussed by the Foundation Grant Program Review Committee.
