CIHR mourns the loss of Louise Dandurand

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is saddened to learn of the passing of Louise Dandurand.

Dr. Dandurand was past-President of the Association francophone pour le savoir, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sciences in Quebec and other French-speaking regions of Canada.

During her distinguished career as a university professor, Dr. Dandurand held senior positions as Vice-President of Research and Strategic Planning at the Université du Québec à Montréal, and Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies, at Concordia University.

Prior to joining Concordia, Dr. Dandurand had been President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture.  She had also served as Director of Policy and Planning at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Secretary-General of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

CIHR President Dr. Alain Beaudet had the good fortune of working closely with Dr. Dandurand: “Louise was a great leader.  I was always impressed with her broad vision for research and her original approaches to supporting it,” said Dr. Beaudet.  “She played a significant role in strengthening the research enterprise in Quebec, in Canada, and throughout the world.”

Dr. Dandurand will be remembered for her commitment to public service and her dedication to promoting higher education and research.  On behalf of Canada's health research community, we offer our deepest condolences to Dr. Dandurand’s family and friends.
