Foundation Grant: Application process

The Foundation Grant program's application process includes a registration, followed by a three-stage competition and review process. Stage 1 and stage 2 applications are completed in a structured format that aligns with the adjudication criteria specific to each stage, as set out in the funding opportunity, and these are evaluated using a specific peer review process as detailed in the Peer Review Manual – Foundation.

  • Stage 1 application and review focus on the caliber of the applicant(s);
  • Stage 2 application and review focus on the quality of the proposed program of research; and,
  • Stage 3 review, the final assessment stage, involves the integration of the results of the stage 2 reviews.

In order to successfully complete their registration and stage 1 and stage 2 structured applications, program leaders are also required to include the relevant CV information by completing the following CVs through the Canadian Common CV (CCV) using the instructions below:

  • Foundation Registration CV
  • Foundation CV

A Notice of Decision (NOD) is provided to all applicants at the end of the stage 1 peer review process; subsequently, successful stage 1 applicants will be invited to submit a stage 2 application and will be provided with a CIHR calculated budget baseline. Stage 2 applicants will be informed of the status of their application at the end of stage 2 and a final Notice of Decision will be provided to stage 2 applicants after the integration of stage 2 and stage 3 results.
